Maseru – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Office has commended Lesotho government for achieving remarkable strides in towards achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG)of education for all.
During her presentation at the Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) 15th annual week held here the UNDP ECONOMIC Advisor and Head of Strategy and Policy, Alka Bhatia said despite the country not doing well to achieve all the MDGs, it has made remarkable success in education.
“Although we have not done well in an overall realization of the MDG’s, we may achieve universal education for all,” Bhatia told participants yesterday.
She also said the country has also seen some progress in achieving gender equality in terms of the targets set in the year 2000.
Lesotho has implemented a gender policy which is being overseen by the department of gender.
Noting that peace and stability were important ingredients for realizing the development agenda after the year 2015, she advised the civil society organizations to collaborate with the government and the private sector “in order to achieve sustainable development.”
In her address the Lesotho Council of Non-governmental Organisations (LCN) Coordinator of Health and Social Development Commission, ’Mamathule Makhotla said community consultations on Basotho’s development aspirations were conducted in the ten districts.
According to her it was found out that there was generally “low knowledge on the MDGs as the civil society organizations were not fully engaged in the implementation of the goals.”
She urged the organizations to work towards moving from debates to action as part of implementing development policies through accountability and transparency.
As a way forward, LCN Policy Advisor Stefan Hladenki observed that the civil society movements are equipped with expertise to be used to drive a development agenda in the next year.
“An action plan will be designed on how the government and the civil society organizations are to partner in development in specific areas,” said Hladenki.
The LCN event is attended by member organizations affiliated to it.
