Maseru – The Lesotho Correctional Service prisoners are still failing to be physically brought to the magistrate court for remands as a downing of tools by the prison warders continues.
When newsline365.wordpress.com visited the magistrate court today, no inmates were being brought to court for remands.
The magistrate court information office confirmed to the blog that there were no prison inmates being “brought to court due to striking prison staff members.”
The office said the warders were still only “bringing in blue forms” for remand of the prisoners. newsline365.wordpress.com learned that the two magistrates assigned for remands were reluctant to accept the “warders submission of blue forms.”
The Lesotho Correctional Service staff began dragging feet on duty from December 12 2014 demanding pay increase and improved working conditions.
Justice Minister Motlohi Maliehe recently publicly announced that negotiations between the staff representation and the relevant authorities to resolve the issue.
While pronouncing the action was unlawful, Maliehe pleaded with the ‘striking’ members to go back to work and perform their duties in a normal way asking that the government be given time to deal with the issues at stake.
